WHAT DOES JULIAN & SONS DO?
Julian & Sons is a high end, custom woodworking facility specializing in designing and building custom furniture and architectural millwork. We combine these features to create entire wood environments instead of “just” furniture pieces. We can take each project from design to completion. Our specialties include executive offices, boardrooms or media rooms, trophy rooms, libraries, gun rooms, kitchens, wine rooms and virtually anything in which fine woodwork is involved.

WHAT IS THE DESIGN PROCESS?
After a consultation interview, we start with the concept drawings, which we will send out with a proposal. If the contract is rewarded, we will then start on the detailed drawings and continue to work with our client until they are happy with the overall design.
This depends upon the size or scope of the project. Small Projects may be done over the phone, or with e-mails; however, a more complex project may require a consultation interview. After a Consultation Interview we will provide a scope of work proposal. Then we can proceed with the concept drawings, layouts, and price estimates. If a contract is rewarded, the project is put into our schedule. We will continue to work with the client and all necessary parties involved in the project.

DO YOU ACTUALLY BUILD THE ROOM?
For many, especially smaller projects, we generally will assist your local contractor and let them spearhead the construction of the substructure and coordinate the mechanical sub-contractors. However we have the capabilities to run an entire project if the client so desires. We are team players and realize that for a project to run smoothly and efficiently, all involved must work together for the best results. With our experience in these specialized projects, we have met some very qualified technicians and artists who may be able to enhance the project. Aside from design consultation, and project coordination, Julian and Sons expertise is in the field of custom cabinetry and architectural millwork..

I ALREADY HAVE AN ARCHITECT AND/OR INTERIOR DESIGNER. WILL YOU WORK WITH THEM?
Absolutely, as mentioned earlier, we are team players and work for our client’s best interest. We have worked with many fine architects and designers, as well as artists and specialists that has our knowledge and experience. Because of that we can mutually share important input from the design stage forward. This will save both time and money for our client, as well as insure a overall better project.

HOW DO I PERSONALLY GET STARTED WITH A TROPHY ROOM PROJECT?
You need to call us and we will set up an interview with you. Since custom design is very personal, we want the project to reflect your personality, not ours. We need to get to know you as an individual, and then we will have somewhere to start. This gives us insight on what you do and do not like. Also, since most of our work is in very specialized areas, we try to cover some of the mechanical and structural considerations to be resolved. This is where we can generally help in getting the project started in the right direction, which ultimately saves both time and money. Our consultation fee is $3,000.00 plus travel expenses. We try to fly as economically as possible to save our clients unnecessary expense.
Something to note is that we encourage that the interview arrangement include any or all major people involved in the project, i.e., the spouse, the architect, the builder, design person, etc. More heads are better than one and if all are humbly working together for the client’s interests, the project will run more smoothly with the ultimate goal accomplished.

WHAT WOODS DO YOU USE?
Woods are like fine food; everyone has their own palate. We want to use a wood that appeals to you because it is your project. We will, however, help you with recommendations based upon our interview. We hope to help you create something very personal and unique. For the most part, we use mostly American black walnut along many different exotic hardwoods from Africa, South and Central America. These include exotic-Padauk, bubinga, Wenge, Black Limba, Sipo, Sapele and many others. Domestic woods include-Cherry, Oak, Hickory, Maple, Fir and others.

WHAT’S YOUR TURN-AROUND TIME?
That depends on the size of the project. We generally stay about four to six months booked up on larger projects. That is why we want to start in the beginning design stage, so we can coordinate scheduling. Sometimes, these projects are years in the making. Smaller projects, such as individual pieces of furniture, take less time and can be worked into production in less time.

DO YOU HAVE A CATALOGUE OR PRICE LIST?
All of our projects are custom and unique, thus we do not have a standard price list. Our completed projects are our catalog. On our website we have many photographs to show the quality of our work and our design capacity. Pricing of each project is based upon the scope of the work and the many variables involved. We don’t like surprises, and neither do our clients. So, everything will be spelled out in a honest and fair price. If a change is made in ‘mid-stream’, a change order will be implemented immediately, not at the end of a project. ‘Apples for Apples’, our clients have found us more than competitive for the quality of our work. We are proud of our reputation of honesty and integrity. .

HOW DO YOU GET THE MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS TO THE PROJECT?
That varies upon the size of the project. If we are building an art pedestal, obviously it will be cost effective to crate and ship the piece directly to our client. On the other hand, if we are doing an entire room or large project (i.e., an office or trophy room), we will ship or bring the components with us, where we will install and finish our work on the project site. That way we can complete our portion of the project “turn-key”.

MY WIFE IS NOT CRAZY ABOUT A “TROPHY ROOM.” HOW CAN I WORK THIS OUT?
Our goal is to help you design a livable and functional game room where you and your family will want to spend time together and entertain friends, not just a wall with a lot of “dead animals.” Tastefully designed, you can combine the personality of your hunting passion into a warm, interesting, tactful atmosphere. The woodwork and furniture we design help lend functionality to the environment. Such might include entertainment centers, bars, gun cabinetry and the like.
